KSEA is pleased to announce that Dr. Tai Ryang Shin and Mrs. You Hyun Shin donated $35,000 towards the KSEA scholarship endowment. Dr. Tai Ryang Shin is the President at Swagger Foods Corporation and the recipient of the 2017 KSEA Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The KSEA Council approved “Tai Rayng and You Hyun Shin Scholarship” as a new KSEA named scholarship in November, 2020.
Dr. Shin is a President and Founder of Swagger Foods Corporation located in Vernon Hills, IL and has a Ph.D. degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He started his company in Chicago, 1978 and the business has steadily grown to supply a range of customers in the retail and industrial food markets.
The company manufactures a variety of healthy food products such as a custom seasoning blends to classic main and side dish seasoning mixes as well as other specialty items from the company’s factory with a customer-centric focus based on innovative R&D.
As a cancer survivor, Dr. Shin has developed a passion for how food provides needed nutrition in the patient recovery process. He has dedicated himself to apply his academic background in food science and industrial business expertise to create new innovative products. In particular, those that are easily digestible and mitigate oxidative stress for this growing market, and further contribute to human health and nutrition.
Dr. Shin is actively involved in several professional memberships and positions, receiving recognition and several awards. Dr. Shin has made notable contributions to the community and further education by providing a gift to UIUC for its Plant renovation as well as establishing two scholarships, one of which is his own company scholarship called the “Swagger Foods Corporation Scholarship.”
He has a life-long passion for education, achieving his Ph.D. degree at the age of 65. Providing opportunities for the next generation of academic-oriented scientists and engineers with the intellect and character to pursue their dreams and give back to society through their own contributions is a goal Dr. Shin wishes to achieve with this scholarship.
