Youth STEM Talk National Competition

Youth STEM Talk National Competition on June 8th, 2023

The Youth STEM Talk National Competition, held on June 8th, 2023, was a platform for students in grades 9 – 11 to showcase their knowledge and speaking skills in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The event aimed to enhance students’ public speech and leadership abilities while allowing them to share their interests and expertise in STEM topics.

The competition consisted of two rounds. In the first round, participants were required to submit a 3-minute video of their talk. To ensure fairness and impartiality, individuals with conflicts of interest were prohibited from the whole evaluation process. Thus, Dr. Jiyoon Yoon and Dr. Jun Goo were designated as judges and reviewed all the submitted videos using an evaluation rubric. From the pool of entries, the top 6 students were selected to proceed to the second round.

The second round of the competition took place on June 8th, 2023, and was conducted through the Zoom video conferencing platform. The invited students presented their talks live, and each participant was given 5 minutes to deliver their speech on their chosen STEM topic. During the second round of the competition, Dr. Jiyoon Yoon, Dr. Jun Goo, and Mr. Seungwon Chung evaluated the students’ talks and awarded them based on the total scores.

We believe this event may foster critical thinking and communication skills among the participating students while helping them gain confidence in their abilities. By providing a platform for young minds to share their knowledge and passion for STEM, the competition encouraged their intellectual growth and development as future leaders in these fields.

The program was organized by Dr. Jae Hyeon Ryu (University of Idaho), Dr. Myon Hee Lee (Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University), Dr. Jiyoon Yoon (University of Texas at Arlington), and Dr. Jun Goo (University of Texas – MD Anderson Cancer Center).
