Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association Newsletters

November 2023

Dear Esteemed KSEA Members,

We are delighted to unveil the inaugural edition of the e-newsletter for the 52nd administration, designed to foster a strong connection between you and the KSEA community.

Within this edition, we proudly present the highlights from recent national events, including:

  • SEED 2023 during UKC 2023: A platform dedicated to nurturing the early career development of KSEA scientists and engineers, offering wholehearted mentorship from esteemed and active members, along with peer encouragement throughout the event.
  • Daily Highlights of YGF/YPF 2023: Hosted in Seoul, Korea, this event gathered over 110 young Korean scientists and engineers from 16 different countries, all centered around the theme “To The Sky.” It also featured their active participation in the 1st World Congress of Korean Scientists and Engineers.
  • Testimonial from iDrone 2023 Participant, Mr. Michael Hsieh: Michael seized the opportunity to present his poster entitled, “Conceptualizing Information Drones to Benefit Underserved Communities” at UKC.
  • 2023 Data Science Workshop: Held during UKC 2023, this workshop placed a special emphasis on machine learning in the context of biomedical data.

We are also excited to bring you the latest on the Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) signed between KSEA and two prestigious institutions, Seoul National University (SNU) and Gyeonsang National University (GNU). These MOUs mark the beginning of active international collaborations and partnerships, particularly for post-doctoral scientists exchange, space science, and aerospace engineering. While the MOU with SNU was executed virtually, the one with GNU was celebrated with a visit from President Soon Ki Kwon and his team to the KSEA headquarters.

In this edition, we pay tribute to Prof. Moon Won Suh of North Carolina State University, the 23rd KSEA President, who reflects on KSEA’s contributions to the scientific and technological development of Korea through an insightful interview with Monthly Choson (월간조선). We also remember Dr. Chai Chin Suh, the 19th President of KSEA, who, with a remarkable career as both a scientist and faculty member, left us on August 11, 2023. While we cannot halt the passage of time, we celebrate his illustrious career through a dedicated article.

The strength of KSEA is embodied in its diverse members who are trailblazing in every discipline of science and technology across the globe. In this spirit, we present two brief articles featuring the 2022 Young Investigator Grant recipients, Dr. Kangwook Lee from the University of Wisconsin and Dr. Jihye Park from the University of Colorado. Additionally, we showcase Dr. Young Choi from Regent University, whose book, “Cybersecurity Applications and Artificial Intelligence,” has been translated into six different languages.

Lastly, this edition spotlights the vibrant core of KSEA – our chapters. We’ve selected articles that capture the essence of KSEA’s resilience and promising future, with highlights from events such as the Chicagoland Picnic, the South Texas Young Generation Forum, the University of Maryland Membership Drive, the Southwest Ohio Picnic, a technical seminar at the Austin-TX chapter, and the KSEA Senior Forum. These remarkable gatherings not only demonstrate KSEA’s enduring strength but also inspire future generations to dream big and shape the world.

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to KSEA. Together, we are driving innovation, pushing boundaries, and ushering in a bright future for science and engineering for both the US and Korea.

Yongho Sohn

52nd President of KSEA
