KSEA-Eastern Carolina Chapter hosted a workshop on November 17, 2023, at the East Carolina University main campus. The workshop aimed to help establish the network and promote collaboration among regional scientists and engineers.
Two scientists were invited as the speakers to introduce their disciplined research: Dr. Hwanhee Hong (Associate Professor at Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Duke University) and Dr. Eun Hoo Kim (Associate Professor of Chemistry, Methodist University).
Dr. Hong’s presentation, “Statistical Methods to Integrate Multiple Data Sources for Comparative Effectiveness Research,” showcased the development of statistical methods in biomedical applications in public health and medicine. The methodological innovations in her research, Bayesian hierarchical models, were explained in plain English to everyone, including social researchers and students.
Dr. Eun Hoo Kim presented his journey with student scholars in the “Synthesis of 2,2-Difluorinated [6]-Gingerol using Trifluoroacetate Release” research. Both presenters were from private institutions but were in very different environments (students, funding, and geographic differences). Dr. Kim presented the contents interestingly and shared how he, in a resource-scarce private liberal arts institution, inspired his students to become emerging scholars. Although the subject matters of both presentations sounded highly scientific, the presenters were very engaging with non-scientists in mind. The event was open to anyone, regardless of whether they were local or away. Twenty-one people joined the workshop in person and online combined. Three high school seniors were also joined to hear from the top scholars and experience the research in higher education. It showcased the active research of Korean-American scholars.
