On December 1, 2023, the KSEA Georgia (GA) chapter hosted a membership drive and seminar event in Duluth, GA, attracting 46 attendees. Eight individuals either joined or renewed their KSEA membership during the event. In the initial two hours, participants engaged in a networking dinner where they had the opportunity to introduce themselves to one another. Additionally, general agendas for chapter operations were discussed during this period. Chapter President Sang Hyuck Park highlighted the benefits of KSEA membership, including international conferences, namely the US-Korea Conference (UKC), and other national-wide seminars, local seminars, and events, all available at a very low membership fee. He encouraged members to bring their colleagues and friends to the next event and join KSEA.
During the final hour, Dr. Sohyun Park, CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Branch Chief, delivered a special talk on “Exploring Your Next Career Move: Fellowship and Job Opportunities at CDC.” The seminar was tailored for both entry-level job seekers and individuals contemplating a mid-career change. While Dr. Park used the CDC as a focal point for job seekers, she emphasized that the fundamental tactics and skills discussed could be applied to job applications in various fields. Professionals in science, technology, medicine, healthcare, and business, among others, could find rewarding careers at the CDC, whether in non-medical roles like economists or as part of the emergency response personnel. Dr. Park’s talk inspired attendees to contribute to public health while advancing their own careers.

Dr. Park elaborated on the CDC’s commitment to hiring diverse individuals through several fellowship opportunities, especially targeting those in the early stages of their careers. She also touched upon non-CDC fellowship opportunities and offered practical tips for those contemplating a mid-career change, utilizing the usajobs.gov website. These tips included insights on finding jobs, crafting CVs, and navigating the application process, as well as other essential factors for securing job offers.
The three-hour event was highly productive and successful as a networking opportunity. KSEA-GA arranged carpooling to allow attendees to communicate and provide rides for those without vehicles. As a result, approximately 30% of the attendees were graduate students who appreciated the valuable seminar and networking dinner. The GA chapter appreciates the unwavering support from the KSEA 52 administration, including President Sohn and VP1 Park.
