Initiated by the YG group of Angelo State University (ASU), the Coffee Chat event took place on January 31, 2024, at the Dining area in the Houston Harte University Center at ASU. Dr. Soyoon Kum (Advisor) and Mr. Joonho Sung (KSEA Publication Director) attended to address any questions student members might have had. Approximately 30 undergraduate and graduate students attended the meeting and were served with Starbucks beverages.
The Coffee Chat event aimed to provide new or potential members with insights into the KSEA and offer a platform for new and current members to connect, thereby enhancing the Korean STEM communities at ASU. Thus, the main focus of this event was to create a casual and comfortable atmosphere for more relaxed and interactive discussions.
To encourage a more comfortable atmosphere at the gathering, the event was divided into two sessions held at different times. Throughout each session, Dr. Kum introduced KSEA, covering its goals, the types of events organized by the association, and the benefits available to members during the first half. In the second half of each session, participants engaged in discussions on various topics, including KSEA/ ASU YG events, visa maintenance for employment in the United States, graduate school admission processes, internship opportunities, and more. Dr. Kum and other students shared their valuable experiences and insights.
The Coffee Chat event proved to be an informative platform for both current and potential KSEA members, fostering a sense of community and knowledge-sharing within the Korean communities at ASU. Additionally, it provided a successful networking opportunity for new and current members to build personal connections within the KSEA ASU YG group.
Overall, the Coffee Chat event exemplified the spirit of collaboration and community within the KSEA ASU YG group. As the success of this event reflects, the ASU YG group is energized to continue fostering meaningful connections and providing valuable resources for YG members. Based on the discussions regarding preferences and expectations about the overall operation of upcoming events during the coffee chat, the ASU YG is planning events for the 2024 Spring.
