Report by Yongho Sohn, 52nd President
The 2nd KSEA Webinar was held virtually on February 1, 2024 as a workshop for NIH Grant Writing with presentations, “Unlocking NIH Funding 101” by Dr. Youngsuk Oh (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH) and “A Guide for Graduate Students and Post-Docs,” Dr. Dah-eun Chloe Chung (Baylor College of Medicine). Over 200 registrants including 37 new KSEA members registered for the workshop, and nearly 100 participants actively engaged in break-out discussion sessions. The webinar workshop and the break-out sessions were moderated by Prof. Sua Myong from Harvard and Prof. Sung Yun Jung from Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Oh first gave an overview of the NIH programs and proposal submission cycles along with key ingredients of successful proposals/programs. Dr. Chung then highlighted opportunities available for graduate students and post-docs, even for those without US citizenship or permanent residency, based on her recent experience as a peer. The workshop then broke into 2 sessions for senior professionals moderated by Prof. Myong, and graduate students/post-docs moderated by Prof. Jung, and continued for more than an hour for engaging topical discussions and mentoring by Dr. Oh and Dr. Chung.
