KAMS (Korean-American Materials Society) Annual Meeting

The annual KAMS gathering fosters networking and collaboration among Korean materials scientists and engineers in the US and Korea. Traditionally, this event has been a staple during TMS (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society) annual meetings since approximately 1994, leveraging TMS’s status as one of the oldest materials research professional societies in the US. This year’s KAMS gathering was convened during the 153rd TMS Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. A total of 34 individuals attended, with 9 representing the US and the remainder from Korea. Notably, there was an increase of 11 participants compared to the previous year, attributed to targeted advertising within relevant TMS Meeting Symposiums. Attendees were primarily affiliated with universities, with representation also from national labs and industry (refer to the attachment). Key figures present included Prof. Yongho Sohn of the University of Central Florida, serving as the 52nd KSEA President; Dr. Se-Don Choo of the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST, 포항산업과학연구원), who holds dual roles as President of KIM (The Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, 대한금속∙재료학회) and RIST; and Dr. Chang-Yong Nam of Brookhaven National Lab, who serves as the KSEA TG C-4 Councilor. The gathering commenced with a dinner, featuring welcoming remarks from the Presidents of KAMS and KSEA, followed by a congratulatory message from the President of KIM. Throughout the event, participants engaged in informal discussions spanning various topics such as the current research funding landscape in the US and Korea, strategies for enhancing collaboration between researchers from both countries, and workforce development initiatives.
