KSEA YG Activities Recap (January-June 2024)

Report prepared by: Jeremy Chung & Matthew Jeon
YG National Board 2023-24

KSEA YG Groups had a successful semester! Here are some of the activities they held. Thank you KSEA for the support for these events!

UCSD KSEA YG: “Photo Booth Event”

The most memorable, effortful, and popular social event that KSEA-YG @UCSD held was the “Photo Booth Event.” Last year, our group wanted to come up with a unique idea for a fundraising event, while most of the other organizations simply sold food or accessories. It is a fact that the operation of this Photo Booth Event—motivated by Life4Cuts—was nearly five times more work than we initially gauged. However, we can confidently say that the popularity our club gained from this event was worth much more than our extensive amount of work. First, we rented a professional camera, lighting, rooms, monitors, remotes, and curtains. Then, we prepared a monitor and connected it to the camera to show a real-time screen to the customers. Lastly, our engineers created a piece of code to automate the process of inserting photos into the Life-4-Cut-esqe formatted frame. Making all of these tasks possible on the event date, we obtained around 50 customers in one day. Based on this remarkable success, we held this event again this year and are planning to host it again next school year.

University of Wisconsin KSEA YG: “Zero Hunger Event”

The KSEA University of Wisconsin YG Group chose a theme of “Zero Hunger,” aligning with one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Members were organized into groups based on their majors, with each group tasked with devising comprehensive plans aimed at promoting the goal of zero hunger. Within these plans, specific objectives were set, along with two strategies for achieving these objectives, methods of implementation, and explanations of the importance of these goals. Regular meetings were scheduled to facilitate the presentation of progress on these comprehensive plans and to foster discussion among members.

UCLA KSEA YG: “Bruin Banquet”

Hosted by the University of California, Los Angeles KSEA YG Group (BruinKSEA), on the evening of March 9th, more than 70 students from UCLA, UC Irvine, USC, and other members of the Korean community gathered at the UCLA Fowler Museum for BruinKSEA’s Bruin Banquet. The attendees dressed up in professional attire and convened at the Museum courtyard adorned with string lights, cocktail tables, and a red carpet. The event was filled with entertaining activities, games, and networking opportunities, strengthening ties among various YG members. It also celebrated Korean heritage and the achievements of BruinKSEA members, who continue to support education and mentorship within the community.

Purdue KSEA YG: “ProfeSSUL”

ProfeSSUL is a series of events where STEM major professors are invited as guest speakers to Purdue University, followed by casual socializing with students in the YG Group. These events provide great opportunities for students to ask about their future careers and detailed application processes. They also enrich academic curiosity for students who have academic and career-related questions for the professors.

Angelo State University KSEA YG: “Coffee Chat”

Angelo State University (ASU) KSEA YG Group’s most memorable social event was the Coffee Chat event. Approximately 30 undergraduate and graduate students attended the meeting, and Dr. Kum Soyoon (Advisor Professor) and Mr. Joonho Sung (KSEA Executive Committee member) attended to address any questions student members might have had. The event served as a platform for the exchange of invaluable insights covering diverse subjects, including visa maintenance, job-seeking strategies, and the graduate school admission process. Above all, it provided a great networking opportunity, allowing both new and existing YG members to convene and foster personal connections within the ASU YG community in Texas.

UT Austin KSEA YG: “Technical Seminar”

University of Texas, Austin KSEA YG Group hosts professional presentations or talks focused on a specific technical or scientific topic. They are delivered by expert or knowledgeable speakers, often including graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, to an audience interested in learning about the subject. In this instance, the speaker was Dr. Jongwoong Park, who presented on smart sensing technologies for monitoring infrastructure.

Georgia Tech KSEA YG: “Bigger Future Series Event”

One of the signature events of the Georgia Tech KSEA YG Group, the Bigger Futures Series session “All About Industry,” was a great success. Georgia Tech alumni currently working in various industries were invited to present about their current responsibilities and provide advice on having a successful college experience. Participants were provided with coffee and Pepero in celebration of Pepero Day, and many stayed afterward to network with the speakers and their peers.

TAMU KSEA YG: “Career Development Forum”

The Career Development Forum (CDF) was one of the most popular professional events at Texas A&M University (TAMU) KSEA YG Group. Organized jointly between undergraduates, graduates, and professionals from the South Texas Chapter, this event featured speakers from both industry and academia who shared their career journeys, providing valuable insights and advice. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions with the speakers. Additionally, the event offered a delightful culinary experience with a variety of Korean street food, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for networking and learning.
