The Korean American AeroSpace Science and Technology Association (KASSTA) was recently established as a non-profit organization to promote cooperation between the USA and Korea in Space and Aeronautics-related fields.
KASSTA became KSEA’s APS thanks to the strong support of KSEA Executive Committee, led by President Yongho Sohn and the APS committee led by VP2 Yong-kyu Yoon, followed by the timely approval of the council.
KASSTA is exempt from Federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code thanks to the dedicated help from Professor Sung-Ju Kim.
KASSTA had its first Webinar on April 21. It was organized jointly with KSEA. There were two invited speakers: Dr. Soyeon Yi, the first astronaut of Korea, and Dr. Tony S. Sohn, Principal Staff Scientist of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). Dr. Yi gave a presentation entitled “Mindfulness from Weightlessness,” and Dr. Tony S. Sohn gave a presentation entitled “The Science Performance of James Webb Space Telescope.” The Webinar was moderated by Professor Eun-Suk Seo, KASSTA President. The Webinar was a great success with 78 participants, many of whom became new KASSTA/KSEA members. Each talk was 20 minutes, but the Webinar lasted one and a half hours, including many questions and vibrant discussions.

The second Webinar was held on May 19 with two invited speakers: Dr. Kyongsik Yun, Technologist of Autonomous Systems, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Mr. Daniel Warren, Vice President of Sales & Programs, Latecoere. Dr. Yun gave a presentation entitled “AI in Space Exploration.” In this talk, Dr. Yun gave insights into how AI is utilized for NASA space missions and supports the development of related software. Mr. Warren gave a presentation entitled “Shedding Light on LiFi: Revolutionizing Secure Wireless Communication for Aerospace and Defense.” The Webinar lasted approximately one and a half hours, providing valuable scientific and engineering insights.

Both Webinars were recorded. Recordings of talks and copies of questions answered in Zoom Chat are available on the KASSTA Web, https://kassta.ksea.org/.
