The KSEA Gainesville FL Chapter and UF KSEA YG Group have experienced remarkable membership growth this year, expanding from 19 to a robust community of 56 members. This revitalization underscores the chapter’s commitment to fostering a vibrant network of Korean-American scientists and engineers at the University of Florida and within the broader Gainesville area, supporting members in their academic and professional journeys.
The chapter’s first general meeting and membership drive, held at the University of Florida’s Reitz Union on October 11, 2024, brought together 50 members and non-members. Attendees engaged in discussions about the chapter’s mission, vision, and plans for the coming year. Dr. Hyun Dong Kim, the new Chapter President, was introduced and is the first young generation president to lead the Gainesville FL Chapter, bringing fresh energy and vision to the chapter’s leadership. In addition, the newly established University of Florida YG Group was introduced by its YG President, Woohyun Eum, who shared the group’s goals and initiatives with attendees.
The meeting also introduced the new board, highlighted upcoming events, and emphasized the wealth of resources available through KSEA. Professor Yong-Kyu Yoon shared insights into his research and the chapter’s growth, highlighting the importance of collaboration and professional development within the community.
The event concluded with a networking dinner at Garlic and Ginger, a local Korean restaurant. Members celebrated the chapter’s revitalization and the founding of the new YG Group at UF over a delicious meal, fostering stronger connections within the community and setting the stage for a productive year ahead.
To further support student success, the chapter will be hosting a Student Success Conference on November 22nd. The conference will feature expert speakers, interactive panel discussions, and networking opportunities aimed at helping students navigate academic challenges, explore career paths, and connect with industry professionals. This event promises valuable insights for both undergraduate and graduate students, empowering them to advance in their respective fields. Looking forward to the Student Success Conference and continued growth, the Gainesville FL Chapter encourages active participation and support. With a full calendar of events, the chapter remains dedicated to creating opportunities for members to excel academically, professionally, and personally. Thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of all members, new and returning, the chapter is poised for a year of collaboration and achievement.
