Event Guest: Dr. Young Kim, Professor of Packaging Science at Virginia Tech

On September 4, 2024, Virginia Tech hosted a Resume seminar that proved to be a valuable resource for students preparing for their careers. Dr. Young Kim from the Department of Packaging Engineering led the workshop from 6 PM to 7 PM, attracting around 20 students eager to improve their resumes. The seminar was held in anticipation of the upcoming Career Fair EXPO, which takes place from mid-September to early October. Dr. Kim provided in-depth guidance on how to craft a well-structured resume, offering clear comparisons between successful and less effective resumes. He emphasized the importance of presenting oneself clearly and professionally, highlighting the key aspects HR professionals prioritize when evaluating resumes.

One of the seminar’s main focuses was the difference between undergraduate and graduate resumes or CVs. Dr. Kim explained that while undergraduate resumes should concisely prioritize academic achievements, skills, and work experience, graduate-level CVs should emphasize research experience, publications, and detailed project descriptions.

Toward the end of the session, Dr. Kim reviewed the resumes of all the attendees, providing tailored feedback and suggestions for improvement. He helped students refine their content and structure, ensuring that their resumes effectively showcased their strengths. In addition, he generously offered to continue assisting students via email after the seminar.

This seminar went beyond essential resume tips, offering students a valuable opportunity to reflect on their career goals and learn how to articulate their skills and achievements better. It was critical to their preparation for the upcoming Career Fair EXPO.
