The 2024 KWiSE Annual Conferences were a testament to the organization’s commitment to empowering women in STEM by promoting innovation, collaboration, and leadership. The diverse interests and requirements of its members were reflected in the unique opportunities for knowledge-sharing, mentorship, and community building that each chapter’s event offered.
DC Chapter (website)
The symposium of the DC Chapter was designed to motivate and unite attendees by providing STEM students with insights from field experts, facilitating networking for postdocs, intermediate and senior scientists, and introducing KWiSE to potential new members. Dr. Hyun Lillehoj (USDA) and Dr. Dong-Yun Kim (NIH) delivered keynote speeches that provided valuable career advice and scientific perspectives. Networking opportunities and discussions regarding financial planning and mental health were included in the afternoon sessions. Graduate students and early-career scientists, who constituted 65% of attendees, were significantly impacted by the additional reinforcement of mentorship and collaboration through small group discussions.
LA/SD Chapter (LA chapter website, SD chapter website)
The annual meeting of the LA/SD Chapter convened scientists from a variety of STEM disciplines, such as computer engineering and medical biotechnology. By fostering a connection between academia and industry and bridging generational divisions, the event cultivated a dynamic community. Junior members were notably benefited by mentor-mentee group sessions, which offered personalized career guidance. The conference’s role as a cornerstone of the KWiSE network on the West Coast was further solidified by its emphasis on collaboration across disciplines and career stages.
NIH Chapter (website)
The inaugural “BelongMed Conference 2024” was hosted by the NIH Chapter in collaboration with the NIH-Korean Scientist Association (NIH-KSA) and the NIH Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). This event focused on “Precision Health and Music as Medicine,” with a special emphasis on patient engagement. A patient with progeria, Wonki Hong, shared an inspiring story that underscored the significance of inclusivity in healthcare innovation. Nutrition, gender disparities, the microbiome, and advanced therapeutics were examined. The conference facilitated the cultivation of a supportive culture within the NIH community, inclusive mentorship, and global collaboration.
NY/NJ Chapter (website)
The fall conference of the NY/NJ Chapter, which was themed “How to Prepare for Generative Artificial Intelligence,” included expert presentations that explored the applications of AI in the fields of health and psychology. Dr. Balachandran addressed the topic of AI-enhanced exercise programs for older adults, while Dr. Kang investigated the role of AI in the diagnosis and treatment of autism. Dr. Yang introduced innovative technologies that have the potential to revolutionize senior living. Interactive Q&A sessions, networking activities, and discussions on cutting-edge AI applications were conducted by attendees. The event celebrated the accomplishments of the KWiSE community while also empowering participants to confront societal challenges.
SE Chapter (website)
The SE Chapter’s conference, “Leadership and Innovation in Science and Technology: Advancing Public Health and Community Impact,” offered a platform for women scientists to connect, exchange experiences, and advance their careers. The event emphasized the importance of leadership and innovation in addressing public health challenges and promoted collaboration. Mentoring opportunities and discussions regarding critical issues in science and engineering were advantageous to participants.
