On November 22, 2024, the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association Silicon Valley Chapter (KSEA SVC), led by Chapter President Dr. Gwansuk Kang, held its monthly seminar at Stanford University.
The seminar featured Dr. Jeonghee Rho, a senior research scientist at the SETI Institute, who delivered an in-depth lecture titled “Universe and Supernovae.” Her presentation explored the origins and evolution of the universe, focusing on the critical role of supernovae in cosmic development.
Supernovae and the Evolution of the Universe Dr. Rho explained how supernovae—explosions of massive stars—generate heavy elements, molecules, and cosmic dust that are fundamental to galaxy and star formation. Drawing on data from infrared telescopes, the James Webb Space Telescope, and spectroscopic experiments, she emphasized that supernovae provide crucial clues for understanding the chemical evolution of the early universe and the ongoing expansion of space.

Human Space Exploration and the Future
The seminar also revisited the legacy of space exploration since humanity’s first moon landing in 1969 and examined current lunar and Martian missions led by the U.S. and South Korea. Dr. Rho discussed the transformative impact of these missions on future generations and the expanding possibilities for human space exploration.
Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Earth-like Planets Dr. Rho introduced the ongoing search for Earth-like exoplanets and the possibility of intelligent extraterrestrial life, as studied by SETI. She shared the latest scientific findings and developments in the field, offering attendees a glimpse into the future of astrobiology and interstellar research.

A Memorable Evening Despite the Rain Despite rainy weather, more than 40 participants attended the event. The seminar also welcomed several local students and young attendees, whose curious questions sparked rich, intergenerational dialogue. The atmosphere highlighted the universal fascination with the cosmos and the power of science to bring people together across ages and backgrounds.
